Don't-Call-Me-Sugar Cookies with Lynn Grout

Lynn Grout: Don’t call her Sugar. Or Cookie.

Lynn Grout: Don’t call her Sugar. Or Cookie.

About Lynn: Lynn Grout is the Scarlett O'Hara of Green Lake: a striking beauty who is not afraid to soil her frock when there's a job to be done.

She started the real estate company Special Properties in 1992 when there was nary a woman to be found in the local industry. The general reaction was: "Honey, why don't you go home where you belong and bake some cookies?"

Which she did. Feeding her five young children....while building a business that grew to $64 million in transactions last year.

In Green Lake, Lynn--just like Scarlett O'Hara--has seen it all. A part-time resident in her early childhood, she moved here in 1965....around the time that the Special Properties office space was a laundromat. She's seen our downtown suffer. And she's been a huge part of the exhilarating rebuilding process of today. When our former county courthouse building--Our "Tara"--faced an uncertain fate, she jumped on board right away--determined to see this great, historic property take the lead in creating Green Lake's future.  She became one of the original board members of the Town Square Community Center, and still serves on the board today.

These days, Lynn is making a mostly-unsuccessful attempt to retire from her business and spend more time with her ever-growing family. She knows she's leaving her company in good hands, but some people can never get enough of the classics--and Lynn is certainly one of those.

Lynn's recipe for success? Just like any recipe, it's all about the ingredients. And Lynn knew from the start that building a great business is all about surrounding yourself with great people.

At home, Lynn has all sorts of secret, historic Green Lake recipes. She keeps her sugar cookie recipe, originally given to her by her late mother in law, on the original scrap of paper.

So it's okay to hold onto the past. If it's in the form of a recipe.

You know it’s a keeper when you can lick the recipe card to sample it.
